Who Inherits Your Instagram? Planning for Your Digital Legacy
In today’s digital age, cherished photos, messages to monetized platforms, accounts like Instagram, Facebook, and Google have all become extensions of our identity. Have you ever considered what happens to these accounts when you’re no longer here?
Estate planning isn’t just about bank, retirement accounts, etc. Your digital assets are just as important and essential to your estate plan.
Your Digital Legacy Matters!
Many of us have dozens (maybe even hundreds) of digital accounts to include: Instagram/Facebook photos, emails and text messages, online banking, cloud storage, subscription services, monetized content, NFTs, and crypto wallets.
When someone passes away without clear instructions, it can leave families locked out of these accounts or left to face complicated procedures— or worse, a permanent loss of data and memories.
You might be wondering what happens to these accounts when you pass away. Well, each platform has its own set of rules. For example:
- Instagram & Facebook allow for memorialization or deletion, but require a formal request and proof of death (i.e., death certificate or funeral card).
- Google lets you activate an “Inactive Account Manager” to designate someone to access your account after a period of inactivity.
- Apple offers a Legacy Contact option for your iCloud and data.
However, unless you take proactive steps, most of these accounts won’t automatically transfer to loved ones, even if you’re legally married.
Preparing for the future of your digital assets involves a few easy steps:
- Make a list of your important accounts (i.e., social media profiles, email addresses, online banking/investment platforms, etc.)
- Name a digital executor – someone you trust to manage or close down your online accounts per your wishes
- Work with your estate planning attorney to clarify your wishes by:
- Adding digital asset provisions to your will or trust
- Ensure your power of attorney includes digital access
- Keep login credentials safe, but accessible when needed
- Use Platform Tools like Facebook’s “Legacy Contact,” Google’s Inactive Account Manager, or Apple’s Digital Legacy Access
Your digital presence is part of your legacy. A few thoughtful steps today can spare your loved ones stress, preserve meaningful memories, and ensure your digital voice is handled according to your wishes.
